Rainbow Chapel & Chaplain
Rainbow Bike Chapel & Rainbow Chaplain
I am working on a long-term interdisciplinary project, the Rainbow Bike Chapel, a mobile performance venue and pop-up sacred space, created as a meeting place between interdisciplinary art, compassionate activism, and nondoctrinal spiritualityThe Rainbow Bike Chapel 1st prototype, March 2015
The Rainbow Bike Chapel is a call for creative expression that helps us to feel and understand that more beautiful futures can emerge--beginning with each of us remembering our own agency to co-create the world.
Our prototype Rainbow Bike Chapel (as seen in pictures) was built with help from radical fabricator Brent "Brent" Koehn as a Thesis Project for the completion of a Master of Fine Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Arts and Media at Columbia College Chicago.

The first Rainbow Bike Chapel began making appearances around Chicago. It would ride in on the back of the bicycle, open wide its doors, flip out the mini-stage, offering liturgies of performance art and durational sessions of "pastoral outreach" with Rev. Chris as Rainbow Chaplain. Sadly, the first Chapel disappeared from the failed DIY art collective where it had been housed. I am now working on a different, more nimble design for the next Chapel.

In the meantime, I have continued to pursue creative outreach opportunities, operating simply as the Rainbow Chaplain, including continuing marrying people to the Earth and completing an artist in residency at Life Force Arts Center, a Chicago gallery and performance/class space dedicated to the spiritual power of the arts. This "rainbow residency" included a performance, a lecture, a film-screening, a panel discussion, free Motherpeace Tarot readings, open conversations, food, and drink.

My role as Rainbow Chaplain is not about starting a religion or pushing belief systems. Even without an actual chapel, it is about creating a mobile alternative space, empowered with the intention of facilitating multimodal conversations. Moments when we deeply empathize with this world's tragic struggles with poverty, violence, insufficient democracy, and environmental destruction, are combined with moments where we can see how the values of compassion, creativity, community, and joy are our best guides toward better futures.
